Describing the gang-rape of a mother of four in Noakhali a ‘medieval barbaric’ incident, Jatiya Oikya Front Convener Dr Kamal Hossain has expressed his grave concern over the rape incident.
In a statement sent to media on Friday (Jan 4), Dr Kamal, who is the president of and Gano Forum, said, “It’s impossible to imagine that such incident can happen in a democratic country.”
On Dec 30 night, a woman was gang-raped raped in Noakhali’s Subarnachar allegedly for casting her vote in favour of BNP’s electoral symbol ‘paddy sheaf.’
At around 12am on Jan 1, a group of 15-16 men barged in at her house, claiming they were police.
They tied her husband and children and took her outside where she was gang-raped and beaten up indiscriminately.
According to the husband’s account, the rape was carried out at the order of local ringleader Ruhul Amin, who is a leader of Awami Leader.
Later the husband filed a case against nine people with the local police station while the women underwent treatment at the state-owned hospital in the district town.
So far, four out of nine accused, mastermind, Ruhul Amin, and seven others were arrested in connection over the incident.
Dr Kamal demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice immediately, saying, “This incident puts our democratic and human rights and freedom of expression at risk”.
He urged people to step forward to avoid any repetition of such incident in the future.
“It’s a shame for the nation,” said Dr Kamal.
