Jamaat skips BNP’s ‘paddy sheaf’ candidates meeting

No member of the Jamaat-e-Islami, who contested the 11th Parliamentary Election with ‘paddy sheaf’ polls logo, attended a meeting called by the BNP in Dhaka.
On Thursday (Jan 3), the BNP held an urgent post-election at the chairperson’s Gulshan offices attended by the party’s candidates as well as those floated by its allies and ran on its symbol.
Leaders of BNP’s allies in the Jatiya Oikya Front — Gano Forum, Nagorik Oikya, Krishak Sramik Janata League and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Rab) attended the meeting.
Candidates of the party’s allies in the 20-party Alliance also joined the meeting.
No Jamaat leaders could not be reached for comments.
A total of 298 candidates, including those of the BNP and its allies, contested the Dec 30 election with paddy sheaf logo.
BNP’s ally Liberal Democratic Party chief Oli Ahmed ran with his own logo ‘umbrella’ from Chattogarm-14 while Jamaat’s Hamidur Rahman Azad as an independent candidate at Cox’s Bazar-2.
BNP chief’s media wing member Shairul Kabir Khan said that 174 ‘paddy sheaf’ candidates joined the meeting presided over by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
As many 22 of Jamaat contested in the Dec 30 polls under the BNP banner using its logo paddy sheaf and three as independent candidates.
