Senior BNP leaders in meeting to discuss next steps

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)The BNP has convened a meeting of its National Standing Committee to decide on its next course of action after the 11th national election.
Members of the party’s highest policymaking forum, has sat in a meeting on Monday (Dec 31) at the chairperson's Gulshan offices.
Sources confirmed that the meeting is presided over by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is being attended by Standing Committee members, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mahbubur Rahman, Jamir Uddin Sircar, Moudud Ahmad, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Amir Khashru Mahmud Chowdhury, Abdul Muyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan.
A meeting of the BNP-led 20-party Alliance is also scheduled at the same venue after the Standing Committee meeting.
Later in the day, the Jatiya Oikya Front alliance’s Steering Committee will meet at the Motijheel offices of its chief Dr Kamal Hossain.
The Awami League is about to form a government for an unprecedented third straight term after winning the election on Sunday. It won 259 of 299 seats while the Grand Alliance it leads won 288 seats.
Oikya Front’s largest member, the BNP, won five seats while the Gono Forum won two.
Soon after the results started coming in after polls closed on Sunday, the opposition alliance demanded the “farcical polls to be scrapped right away” and called for a fresh election.
