The Awami League, which has taken a massive lead in the 11th parliamentary election, has told it activists to act responsibly and not to go for celebrations.
Party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s instruction was conveyed at a media call on Sunday (Dec 30) addressed by its Election Conduction Committee Co-Chairman HT Imam.
“This is not the time for celebrations, but to work for the nation. So, there will be no victory celebrations,” said Imam, who serves as the political affairs adviser to the prime minister.
Party insiders echoed. According to them, the leadership believes that there’s no option other than to start the process to formulate strategies to graduate the country from a mid-income state to a developed one.
“The people have believed in the Awami League and gave its mandate to it once again. We will work for the nation. The Awami League will not celebrate rather for will work in full swing to fulfil the duty the nation has bestowed to it,” Joint General Secretary Abdur Rahman told Bangla Tribune.
According to a source in the Awami League, the prime minister is against any kind of celebrations to avoid any untoward incidents or clashes.
Despite being on the path to a landslide victory, Awami League President Hasina is grief-stricken due to the casualties in violence during the election, the source said.
