Confident of a straight third term, the ruling Awami League has called its supporters to act responsibly.
In a media briefing at the party chief’s Dhanmondi offices after polls closed on Sunday (Dec 30), its Joint General Secretary Abdur Rahman said, “If the results turn out to be in our favour, we will dedicate the win to the people of Bangladesh.”
According to media reports and inputs from the party’s local units says that the Awami League is leading at many places, he said before adding, “We are confident of a landslide victory of the Grand Alliance led by Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina.”
He said that it was a challenge to hold peaceful polls but it was possible “due to the people’s support and an independent Election Commission.”
The credit all goes to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who has exemplified how to hold a credible election despite being in office, he said.
“We have instructed all our activists to hold their positions at all polling centres until the outcome is announced.”
Rahman claimed that compared to the other elections, this election saw the least number of violent incidents. “Out of the 40,000 polling centre in 299 constituencies, voting was suspended in only 16 centres in 12 constituencies.”
He added that the voters’ turnout in the polls this time was also more than satisfactory.
