The Awami League has slammed an election commissioner for calling the law enforcers to uphold the dignity of their uniforms.
“A commissioner’s personal comments may create confusion among the masses,” the party’s polls monitoring committee Co-Chair HT Imam said on Wednesday (Dec 26).
“The Election Commission means the four ECs and CEC. They should talk about what they have all agreed on. No commissioner can or should give individual directions,” he added.
“We were dumbfounded by a commissioner’s comments. All instruction must come from the commission or someone the commission has relegated the task to,” Imam said although he did not name anyone specifically.
However, earlier in the day, during a press briefing, EC Mahbub Talukder called for the law enforcers to do justice to the lofty responsibilities their uniform entails by carrying out their polls duty impartially.
The senior AL leader said that he led a delegation to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda to inform him about the attack on AL leaders and activists by the opposition.
He said that the chain of command is imperative for any institution and if someone breaks the chain it can lead to widespread confusion.
“There is a lot we can do given that we are the ruling party but we come to the EC with our grievances to set an example for other parties because for us the commission is a sanctuary of trust.”
He added that making indecorous comments about the EC or disrespecting it in any way is a matter of shame for them.
