Opposition alliance Jatiya Oikya Front has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda.
“We demand the CEC KM Nurul Huda to step down right away and the President appoints a neutral person as the new CEC,” said alliance spokesperson and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Speaking to media at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan offices on Tuesday (Dec 25), “We demand a new chief election commissioner because we have lost the hope of having a free and fair election under the present one.”
“This shameless, incompetent, and dysfunctional Election Commission (EC) has to be accountable to people for its failure to create a congenial polls atmosphere. We demand the CEC quits immediately,” he said.
Criticizing “inappropriate behaviour” at the EC that led Oikya Front to walk out of a meeting on Tuesday, Fakhrul said, “We can’t even expect neutral behaviour from this CEC.
“AL has been attacking our candidates and activists throughout the country every day. They are also filing false cases against our party members and mass arrests are ongoing. We submitted a complaint regarding the matter to the EC today (Tuesday), but the CEC’s behaviour left us speechless,” said the senior BNP leader.
The incumbent CEC is in favour of the ruling party and doesn’t even take proper action regarding nationwide violence, he claimed.
Pointing at party standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, who was sitting next to him, Fakhrul said, the BNP standing committee member is bloodstained following an attack by the ruling party men.
“This is the sample of the election,” Fakhrul said before urging the EC to look into the incident and act upon.
