The Election Commission is acting like a ‘minion’ of the ruling Awami League, says senior BNP leader Nazrul Islam Khan.
His remarks came on Monday, a day after the High Court stayed the Gazipur City Corporation polls following a petition against redistricting.
“The election commission acts as per the Awami League’s desire. That’s why it’s aloof on challenging the High Court’s order,” Khan told a discussion organized by the 20-Party Alliance, led by BNP.
The government does not want to see BNP chief Khaleda Zia released from jail, according to the BNP National Standing Committee member.
“Even if the Supreme Court grants BNP chief Khaleda Zia bail she will be not be released as a court in Cumilla has scrapped her bail and expected to hear the matter on May 15.”
The top court is scheduled to hear the matter of Khaleda’s bail in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on Tuesday.
However, the former prime minister’s bail in the Cumilla firebombing case has been scrapped and the hearing is scheduled for next week.
“The government is deploying various strategies to keep her in jail,” claimed the BNP leader.
According to Khan, the people are pleased with the BNP as it has gone for ‘peaceful demonstrations’ for the party chief’s release. “They want us now to wage a stern movement.”
Coming down hard on the Awami League and Election Commission, he said, “The staying of the polls to Dhaka North City and Gazipur are linked. And now they will go for the same strategy with the national election.”
The ruling Awami League gets an immediate response from the EC over electoral complains where as the BNP’s complaints are delayed intentionally, claimed the senior BNP leader.
