The incumbent government is sure to fall if people are allowed to cast their franchise, said BNP’s policymaking National Standing Committee member Moudud Ahmed.
“This is a golden opportunity for Jatiya Oikya Front, BNP, 20-party Alliance and the people of Bangladesh. We have to take it,” he told the media on Friday (Nov 30) during a seminar at Press Club.
“Fair polls is impossible under a partisan government.”
“Today it has been proven that as long as the current government holds office it will not be possible for the Election Commission or the police and civil administration to carry out their responsibilities in a neutral manner,” Moudud said.
He claimed that contrary to the EC’s assertions that the police is taking orders from them, it is clear as the day that they are carrying out the government’s orders.
The returning officer is a Deputy Commissioner. At the end of the day, he is an employee of the government, not the EC.
“I don’t blame them. It’s not possible for them to go against the government by risking their jobs and promotions.”
Saying that the EC knows that they have no control over the administration, Moudud warned, “Don’t believe anything they (EC) say.”
He said that the current situation of the country is such that people have to fight to cast their ballots.
“Voting is the only way the essence, democracy, rights of people, judicial independence, freedom of media in Bangladesh can be preserved.”
“Three of our candidates have been sent to the prison in the last two days,” the senior BNP politician alleged.
He added that the law enforcers are raiding the houses of BNP leaders and activists and putting them behind bars because the government knows that they will never win votes the honest way.
