Jahangir Kabir Nanak (File Photo)Sensing a grave defeat in the polls to Gazipur and Khulna city corporations, the BNP is hatching conspiracies, says ruling Awami League stalwarts.
“The BNP is gathering muscle power in Gazipur from across the country,” said Joint Secretary General Jahangir Kabir Nanak before adding that they mostly consist of fugitive convicts.
His remarks came on Wednesday while addressing the media at the party’s Dhanmondi offices.
According to Nanak, Gazipur residents have been deprived of civic services after the BNP candidate was elected mayor in the last election.
Accusing BNP of plunder, terrorism and corruption during its regime, Nanank said “We believe that they have resorted to political malpractices as they know will lose in the city elections.”
Senior leader Hasan Mahmud told the media that it’s clear that the BNP is ‘frustrated and not in their senses’.
On not clearing the party for a rally in Dhaka, he said, “They were denied to use the Shurawardy Udyan as intelligence reports said they will create anarchy.”
Mahmud claimed that the BNP acting chief Tarique Rahman is a Pakistani citizen. “He was born in Karachi, so he’s a citizen by birth.”
The Awami League publicity secretary’s remarks come amid the ruling party claiming that Tarqiue has denounced his Bangladeshi citizenship.
Tarique, who has been living in London since 2008, has submitted his expired passport to the Bangladesh mission through the UK home offices, which the Awami League says amounts to giving up citizenship.
The BNP, however, says he has sought political asylum and described submitting passport as a ‘standard procedure’.
