BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir speaking to the media. The BNP has slammed the Election Commission for statements on announcing the schedules for Eleventh National Election.
“No schedule for the next general election would be acceptable unless political parties reach to a solution over a polls-time administration,” Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Wednesday.
His remarks come after Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam told a media briefing on Monday that they were working to announce the schedule.
He, however, did not spell out a specific date.
The ruling Awami League has said that the parliamentary polls will be held in December.
According to constitutional provisions, the elections have to be completed by Jan 28, 2019.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the senior BNP leader came down hard on the commission over resetting borders of 25 electoral constituencies.
Describing it as the government’s stooge, he said, “The election commission has its own vision and regulations, but they do not go for it. They work in line with the blueprint (given by the government).”
Blaming the commission of being bias, the BNP leader said, “It consists of people loyal to the ruling party and it’s not even capable of holding a credible election.”
Flanked by leaders of the BNP’s labour front, Mirza Fakhrul paid tributes to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman on the anniversary of the ‘Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal’.
The ruling party has sidelined the opposition as well as disregarding the people’s opinion in its bid to establish a one-party rule, claimed the BNP secretary general.
“As soon as the Awami League formed government, it scrapped the caretaker administration, a constitutional provision well accepted by the people,” he said.
According to the BNP leader, the Awami League has ‘destroyed the electoral system and democracy’ by introducing local government polls in party line.
“The Awami League’s prime objective is a one-sided election with BNP chief Khaleda Zia behind bars,” added Mirza Fakhrul.
