A leader of the ruling Awami League’s Feni unit has served Mahmudur Rahman Manna with a legal notice for including his name as Nagorik Oikya’s candidate for the upcoming election.
Khairul Bashar Majumder, a vice president of the Feni district Awami League, sent the notice through his legal counsel on Wednesday (Nov 22).
The notice said that the media reported Majumder as a Nagorik Oikya candidate citing a list provided by it Convener Manna, which has defamed him. It seeks a compensation of Tk 1 billion.
It said a libel suit will be filed in Manna fails to respond within three days.
Majumder was nominated as the Awami League’s candidate from Feni -1 in the 2014 polls. He, however, did not contest as the AL left the seat for its ally Hasanul Haq Inu-led JSD.
The Nagorik Oikya, which is contesting the polls under the Jatiya Oikya Front alliance, has recently announced that it will float candidates in 35 constituencies, which included Majumder.
“I have never been involved with Nagorik Oikya or even met any of its senior leaders,” Majumder told Bangla Tribune before adding it has damaged his ‘political career’.
Manna, however, said Majumder’s statement was ‘not true’.
“I have met that men (Majumder) and discussed it with him. However, I will not comment on the issue now since it’s a legal matter. Let me take me a look at the legal notice first,” he told Bangla Tribune.
