The turnout of people at BNP’s rally proves that its popularity has dwindled to all-time lows, says Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
On the BNP’s demands announced from the Suhrawardy Udyan, including a neutral polls-time administration, he said that there was no option to amend the Constitution.
The Awami League-led government had brought the 15th Amendment to scrap the system of holding national elections under a caretaker government in 2011.
Speaking to the media on Sunday after a meeting of AL’s secretaries at the party chief’s Dhanmondi offices, he said, “The turnout is not even near the eight street rallies we held during our road campaign trip to Cox’s Bazar.”
Describing the turnout at the BNP rally as disappointing, Quader said, “It suggests that the people are not with them ... The party is losing its popularity just because of its negative politics.”
BNP Chairperson Khaleda, who is now serving prison for corruption, was designated as the chief guest at the rally. A chair was left empty for her on the stage in political symbolism.
“They were taking selfies with an empty chair! This is BNP, selfie on the stage,” said Quader, who serves as the road transport minister.
Rolling out a seven-point charter with the release of party chief Khaleda Zia on the top of its agenda, the BNP reiterated its demand for a ‘neutral’ polls-time administration at Sunday’s public rally.
Responding to a query on the BNP’s demand, Quader said, “Let me make it clear, amending the Constitution is not an option.”
