The incarcerated BNP chief Khaleda Zia has been announced as the chief guest and a chair on the stage has been left vacant at the public rally at Dhaka’s Suhrawardy Udyan.
“Since her imprisonment in February, we have been keeping her chair vacant out of respect for her,” Organizing Secretary Shama Obaid said when asked about it.
Scores of BNP leaders, supporters and activists went to join the rally, which began on Sunday at 2 pm.
The party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will be presiding over the rally while standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain will act as the chief speaker.
The rally will call for the government to release Khaleda Zia and withdraw the cases against various BNP leaders including the party’s acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman.
They will also call for the government to relinquish power so that the National Election can take place under a neutral polls-time government.
On Saturday (Sept 29), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) gave BNP the permission to carry out the rally on 22 conditions.
