Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's remarks over the 11th parliamentary election have disappointed the nation, says BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
“The PM’s comments over people’s rights and the national election have frustrated the nation. Holding a free and fair election is now people’s demand, but she (PM) has rejected it saying ‘everything will happen according to the constitution,” he said on Monday (Sept 3).
Speaking to reporters after a programme at the city, Mirza Fakhrul said, “The PM is pursuing a path of establishing a one-party rule.”
“We didn’t find her intention of accepting people’s verdict. She also has no plan to take steps for creating a level-playing field and equal scope for all the parties to ensure a participatory election,” said the senior BNP leader.
Marzia Fakhrul alleged that the government has again started arresting his party leaders and activists across the country to hold a lopsided election.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a press conference said, “No one can stop the election if the people are with us and there’s no doubt that it will be a free, fair and credible one.”
The media call at the PM’s official residence Ganabhaban was meant to brief over her Nepal visit on Aug 30 and 31 when she attended the BIMSTEC summit
