Awami League (AL) Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif came down hard on the Jamaat-e-Islami saying that the Islamist party has used religion as leverage in politics.
“Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) has never used Islam as a political tool. But the Jamaat always plays the religion card in politics,” he said on Sunday while addressing an event at the Islamic Foundation.
The Sheikh Hasina administration has helped Islamic scholars the most in Bangladesh, claimed the senior Awami League leader.
Brushing aside claim of the Awami League being an anti-religion party, Hanif said, “The BNP was in office between 2001 and 2006, but they could not come up with any significant contribution to Islam.”
It was Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who founded the Islamic Foundation after independence, he said before adding: “Bangabandhu allotted land for the Kakrail mosque. He banned alcohol and gambling.”
