BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir briefing the media outside the prison on Saturday. BANGLA TRIBUNE/Salman Tareque SakilBNP chief Khaleda Zia has called the people of the country to get for the struggle for democracy, says senior leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who met the party chief in prison on Saturday.
The BNP had sought permission to meet Khaleda on Wednesday, when the country was celebrating Eid-ul-Azha, but was denied.
“The prison authorities informed Khaleda’s PS today that I can meet her,” Mirza Fakhrul told the media emerging from the old jailhouse on Nazimuddin Road, where the BNP chairperson is serving her term.
He said that Khaleda’s physical condition was not good. “She is very much sick, but her spirits are high. I have briefed her about the situation. We hope she will get bail soon.”
Responding to a query, Mirza Fakhrul said that they did not discuss political or organizational issues during the nearly hour-long visit.
“She called the people of the country to get united for the struggle for democracy and asked to keep her in their prayers,” he said.
Mirza Fakhrul entered the premises just after 4pm and briefed the media outside the entrance around 5pm.
The former prime minister is serving a five-year jail term since Feb 8, when a Dhaka court convicted her of embezzling foreign donations made to the Zia Orphanage Trust.
