The number of annual intakes has been increased by 500 in the 31 public medical colleges.
The state-run institutions now admit 3,318 students in a year, which will be 3,818 from the 2018-19 academic session.
The health ministry said in a statement that the decision to increase students, for the first time in a decade, was taken in a meeting on Wednesday.
The decision came to ensure quality medical care for the people of the Upazila and unions, considering the increasing population pressure, the standards of the World Health Organisation and existing facilities of public medical colleges, said the statement.
