A group of students, who have been protesting for safer roads, have said that they were misled by rumours of their fellows being held at the Awami League chief’s offices in near Jigatala in Dhanmondi.
A large swathe of Jigatala turned into a battlefield for several hours on Saturday as clashes broke out between students and Awami League activists.
The clashes continued until late afternoon. Early in the evening, a group of the students were taken to Awami League offices on Dhanmondi Road 3/A.
Around 6pm, they emerged from the offices and told the media waiting in front of BGB headquarters entrance that they were misled by rumours.
“Just after the midday prayers, some men told us that some of our fellow students, including four girls were being held in the Awami League office. Then a group of protesters move towards the office. But we found nothing like that happened,” said Dhaka Ideal College’s Kazi Ashiqur Rahman Turjo, who was one of the students taken to the party offices.
