Bangladesh Awami League central committee member Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran has violated government instruction by attending different political and public events randomly, instead of staying in home quarantine for 14 days after returning from the United Kingdom.

Sources in Sylhet said that Kamran, also a former mayor of Sylhet City Corporation, returned home from London on Mar 15.

The health department earlier advised all who returned home from abroad to stay in the home quarantine for 14 days in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.

Later, the cabinet, in a meeting on Monday, made quarantine mandatory for all those who returned home from abroad in wake of the coronavirus outbreak in Bangladesh.

However, it was noticed that Kamran attended a program with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka following his returning home.

Various pictures showed that Kamran was not very far when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also Awami League president, were laying a floral wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Dhanmondi 32 on the birth centenary program of Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Some top leaders of Awami League said they did not expect such immature behaviour from party leaders because it was a matter of the prime minister’s safety and security.

However, Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran claimed he was not informed properly about 14-days quarantine period.

Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran“When I landed at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet, the doctors examined me and said my health condition was okay. They never told me to stay home for 14 days as a part of home quarantine. So, how would I know about the restrictions on my movement?” Kamran commented.

He also expressed apologies and sought forgiveness, saying: “I think the thing happens because of lack of my awareness. That’s why I am feeling sorry and apologizing for my fault.”

Kamran, who lives in Machim Pur area of Sylhet City Corporation, also told this correspondent: “I am now maintaining home quarantine. I will not leave my house without completing my quarantine time. My son is a doctor; he is also taking care of my health.”

Kamran, who held the mayoral post for two terms in Sylhet City Corporation, traveled to the UK on mid-February.

His activists and followers gathered at Osmani International Airport to greet him after he returned home on Mar 15.
