A writ petition has been filed with the High Court Division challenging the legality of the conviction of journalist Ariful Islam by a mobile court in Kurigram.
Advocate Ishrat Hasan filed the petition on Sunday on behalf of online news portal Bangla Tribune Executive Editor Haun Ur Rashid.
The bench of Justice Md Ashraful Kamal and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir is expected to hear the matter later on the day.
Ariful, Kurigram district correspondent for Bangla Tribune and Dhaka Tribune, was sent to jail early Saturday, soon after the mobile court, set up at the office of the Kurigram deputy commissioner (DC), ended the trial proceedings.
The mobile court in the dead of night jailed the journalist for a year, after law enforcement members led by magistrates picked him up from his home in Kurigram.
The mobile court brought an allegation against the journalist that drugs and alcohol were recovered from his possession, which his family termed absurd.
