The High Court has pulled up authorities over vehicles without valid fitness documents plying on the roads despite its previous order.
Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has been ordered to come up with explanations and measures taken against unfit vehicles by Feb 17.
The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam on Wednesday (Feb 12) gave the order after hearing of a suo moto rule issued last year before fixing Feb 17 for an order on the matter.
Earlier in day, the BRTA filed a report with the court saying that only 165,764 vehicles, among 458,359, renewed their fitness certificates across the country.
Therefore, 292,595 vehicles without valid fitness documents are running on the roads as Dec 30 last year.
Advocate Rafiul Islam submitted the report on behalf of BRTA in line with an earlier order of the court.
In October last year, the court told the authorities concerned to take necessary steps so that vehicles without valid fitness documents cannot get fuel from any filling station.
It also ordered law enforcers to strictly monitor filling stations across the country so that they do not supply fuel to those vehicles.
