With the Dhaka city polls only days away, most of the city streets and alleys have been flooded with posters of mayor and councillor candidates. Laminated with non-biodegradable plastic, these posters pose a serious threat to environment. Photo: SAZZAD HOSSAIN/ Bangla TribuneThe High Court has issued a ban on Dhaka City corporation polls candidate putting up laminated posters for their campaigns.
The bench of justices M Enayetur Rahim and Mostafizur Rahman gave the order to immediate effect on Wednesday (Jan 22).
The court has also ordered the City Corporation and Election Commission to initiate measures against manufacturing laminated posters and take down those that have already been put up after the elections.
The order comes after a media report regarding the posters was brought to the court’s attention by Supreme Court lawyer Manoj Kumar.
As per environmental law, production, marketing and usage of polythene is illegal. The laminated posters came under criticism due to their potential to cause environmental degradation while the candidates pledge to make Dhaka livable.
