Tabith Awal's campaign 'attacked'

Attack on Tabith Awal during his election campaign in Dhaka`s Gabtoli area on Tuesday (Jan 21, 2020)The campaign of BNP's Dhaka North mayoral candidate Tabith Awal has reportedly come under attack in the city's Gabatali area on Tuesday (Jan 21).

Witnesses said Tabith and other BNP leaders were hurled brickbats around 11.30 am by a group of people raising "Joy Bangla" slogans. Several people were injured, including the mayor aspirant.

Tabith, in his reaction, said: "We will not withdraw ourselves from the campaign in the face of fear. A coward-like attack was carried out targeting me and my fellow campaigners."

"But what's worse is it took place in front of some police officers. They know him. I would urge them to take actions [against the perpetrators]." 

Tabith, who received minor injuries, continued campaigning after the incident.

Police said they did not receive any complaint over the matter but was aware of the incident.

"There was a commotion when two opposite campaigns faced off each other. However, it did not escalate into major violence," Inspector Dulal Hossain of the local Darus Salam police station said before adding no detention or arrest was made.
