The High Court has fixed Tuesday (Jan 14) to declare its decision over rescheduling voting to the Dhaka North and South City corporations.
The bench of justices JBM Hassan and Khairul Alam fixed the date on Monday (Jan 13).
The High Court was moved last week seeking a directive on the Election Commission to defer the voting, slated for Jan 30, as Saraswati Puja will be held on the same day.
In an unofficial meeting of the commission on Sunday (Jan 12), the commissioners agreed to wait for the court's directive before going for a rescheduling.
"We have fixed Jan 30 for the elections to the Dhaka cities. The court has been moved. We will take further steps in line with the court's order," Commissioner Rafiqul Islam told the media after the meeting.
The official campaigns kicked off from Friday (Jan 10) after the polls symbols were allotted to the candidates.
The petition filed with the High Court last week state polls materials will be set up in the educational institutions for the voting. Therefore, the puja will be hampered, which is contradictory to the religious sentiment.
On the other hand, Jagannath Hall authority of Dhaka University has written to the Dhaka South City returning officer. Some other organizations have also urged the Commission to postpone the city polls. Meanwhile, DUCSU has also asked to reconsider about the postponement of the election date of Dhaka North and South City Corporations elections.
