Police are reluctant to follow up on cases of animal abuse despite the new laws, according to rights activists.
On Nov 5 last year, three pet dogs in Purbachal Pink City Residential area were allegedly poisoned while eight others went missing.
The owners lodged a General Diary with Khilkhet police saying that the animals were killed illegally. Although two months have passed, no progress has been made regarding the probe.
The owner of one of the three dogs Sadia Salma Siddiqui Sathi, who is also the president of Animal Lovers' Association, said that because it’s the case of a dog being killed, the police are not taking it seriously.
She said because the police were neglectful of the dogs being killed the incidents are being repeated and two more dogs went missing on Jan 3.
“The police have very little interest in the probe,” she said before adding that she hasn’t been receiving necessary co-operation from the law enforcers.
The owner of the other two dogs killed is film director Shanewaz Kakoli.
Both Kakoli and Shathi complained that the dogs were poisoned and Shathi was even threatened over the phone.
On Nov 7, two days after the GD was lodged, two of the dogs were sent to Central Veterinary Hospital.
The next day two of the missing dogs came back and the rest are still missing.
Shathi complained her pet cat was also found dead in front of the doors and if the police had taken steps the first time, this wouldn’t have happened.
Saying that the CCTV footage of the area has been given to the police, she added, “even then the police are unable to identify the perpetrators."
According to Pink City residents, on the day of the incident, all the CCTVs were switched off and the key to the management office stays with the management committee manager Maidul.
Khilkhet police Sub-Inspector Md Shahjahan told Bangla Tribune that they are yet to receive the autopsy reports and nothing can be done until then.
He denied having knowledge of Shathi being threatened and said his superiors might know about it.
