A fugitive suspect in the killing of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology student Abrar Fahad has been sent to prison after he surrendered in court.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court sent Morshed Amatya Islam to jail after scrapping his bail plea on Sunday (Jan 12).
On Nov 18, the court ordered media circulars against the four fugitive suspects: Morsheduzzaman Jishan, Eheshamul Rabbi Tanim, Morshed Amatya Islam and Mostafa Rafid.
On Dec 3, the same court ordered a freeze on the assets of these four suspects.
On Nov 13, the investigators charged 25 people over the murder. The police said that during the probe, it was revealed that 11 people directly took part in the killing while the rest of the 14 were involved in some way or the other. The investigators filed name of 60 witnesses and 21 pieces of evidence with the court in the charge sheet.
The police pressed charges against Mehedi Hasan Rasel, Anik Sarker, Ifti Mosharraf Shokal, Mehedi Hasan Robin, Meftahul Islam Jion, Muntasir Alam Jemmy, Khandaker, Tabakkharul Islam Tanvir, Mujahidur Rahman, Muhtasim Fuad, Moniruzzaman Monir, Akash Hossain, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Majedul Islam, Shamim Billah, Meyaj Abu Huraira, ASM Nazmus Sadat, Ishtiak Ahmed Munna, Amit Saha, Mizanur Rahman, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, SM Mahmud Setu and Rafi.
On Oct 7, Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, was beaten to death inside his dormitory.
A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League's BUET unit leaders and activists bludgeoned Abrar to death allegedly for his social media post criticizing the Bangladesh-India deal on sharing the water of Feni River.
Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with the capital's Chawkbazar police the day of the murder.
The killing of Abrar sparked protest across the country with protesters demanding justice for him and capital punishment for the murderers.
The BUET authorities also banned the activities of all political student bodies on the campus amid the student protest.
