Attorney general Mahbubey Alam has said that an appeal will be lodged against those who were acquitted in the Pilkhana killing through a High Court verdict.
While talking to journalists about the Pilkahna carnage verdict, the attorney general said: “in the verdict, the death sentence was upheld for 139; three persons have already died and 185 were given a life sentence, of which one died. Two persons were given 13 years sentence with labour; 157 got ten years imprisonment, of which two have died; 13 persons were given 7 years, 14 to 3 years and two persons were given a 1-year sentence.”
Regarding an appeal against the acquitted, he said: “we will make a decision after evaluation.”
As per criminal law, an appeal can be lodged within 30 days.
Mahbubey Alam said: “the verdict has been published in full in 29059 pages. All three justices reached a consensus but they gave different verdicts.”
In the PIlkhana incident, 152 members of the now-disbanded BDR were handed out death sentences on November 5, 2013. The High Court declared a verdict on the death reference and appeal of that verdict on 26 and 27 November 2017.
