As many as 5,227 people were killed in road accidents across the country last year, according to a study conducted by road safety advocacy group.

Another 871 people died while receiving treatment and after being discharged from hospitals, Nirapad Sarak Chai (Nischa) said in a report.

Besides, 6,953 people were injured in road accidents last year.

Nischa Chairman Ilias Kanchan presented the report at a media briefing held at the National Press Club on Saturday (Jan 4).

Quoting the report Ilias Kanchan said, apart from the deceased in road accidents, 198 were killed in train accidents.

The report was compiled based on news reports published in six national dailies, online portals, TV channels and branches of 'Nirapad Sarak Chai'.

Last year, at least 4,702 road accidents were reported.
