Former reserved seat for women lawmaker from Awami League Fazilatunnesa Bappy has passed away at the age of 49.
She breathed her last while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital on Thursday (Jan 2) at 8:20 am, confirmed Vice Chancellor Kanak Kanti Barua.
Previously on Dec 28, she was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia and breathing problems. She was put on life support after her condition deteriorated.
President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed profound shock and sorrow at her death.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Cabinet members, Md Shahab Uddin, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Deputy Speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Miah and Chief Whip Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members in separate condolence messages.
Her funeral prayers will be held at 3pm at the South Plaza of the Parliament, said an Awami League statement.
Hailing from Brahmanbaria, Fazilatunnesa Bappy was elected as a lawmaker in the 9th and 10th parliament for reserved seats from Awami League.
She also served as a prosecutor for the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and Assistant Attorney General of the Supreme Court.
