Chill-related diseases claim 49 lives in 50 days

Bangladesh is facing a winter chill and during the winter, the incidence of jaundice, eye infection, diarrhea, skin diseases, fever and other diseases has risen.

As per the health emergency operations centre, from Nov 1 till Dec 21, 49 persons have died due to a variety of ailments. In the last 50 days, 9,562 persons have been affected with respiratory complications, 22,642 with diarrhea and 12,565 persons with other health complications.
Four persons have died due to respiratory and other problems. In Chattogram division, 6,478 persons have been affected by respiratory infections, 17,211 persons attacked by diarrhea and 48,271 reported other diseases.
In Rajshahi, 1,600 persons have been affected by respiratory infection, 9,931 with diarrhea and 8,935 from other diseases.
In eight districts of Rangpur, 3,433 persons have been affected by respiratory complications in the last 50 days.
In Dhaka, the number of patients has risen at Dhaka Shishu Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Resident doctor of Shishu Hospital, Rezwanul Ahsan, said: “Owing to the cold spell the out patient section is handling 250 to 300 patients.”
Dr Ayesha adds: “Cases of Pneumonia and respiratory complications rise during winter.”
Medicine specialist and former dean of BSMMU, professor ABM Abdullah added: “In addition to caring for the children, we must also look after the elderly because their immunity is low. We should also refrain from giving antibiotics for seasonal ailments.”
