Customs authorities have detained a passenger with 8.45 kilograms gold at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The detainee, Himel Khan, landed at the airport from a Dubai-return Emirates Airlines flight around 11pm on Monday (Dec 2).
Customs House Assistant Commissioner Sazzad Hossain said that authorities issued an alert at the green channel of the airport after being tipped-off regarding an illegal consignment.
He added that customs employees seized the gold after challenging him and subsequent scanning of Himel’s backpack.According to customs officials, Himel was carrying 72 gold bars and 98 grams gold jewelries, which worth Tk 42.25 million.
Hossain said that he was being handed over to the police and steps will be taken against him under the customs legislation.
