File Photo/Mahmud Hossain OpuThe Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested another suspect in BUET student Abrar Fahad murder case.
SM Mahmud Setu has been arrested around 7pm on Sunday (Oct 27) from the capital’s Banglamotor area, said police.
So far, 21 people have been detained in connection with the case.
“SM Mahmud Setu was detained from Banglamotor area around 7pm on Sunday. Although his name was not cited in the first information report, Setu was detained based on confessional statements of the other arrestees and relevant evidences in connection with Abrar murder,” said Md Masudur Rahman, deputy police commissioner (media) of DMP.
During primary investigation, Setu said he was a 14th batch student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and completed his Bachelor of Science this April.
He used to stay at the Room Number 2012 of Sher-e-Bangla Hall and works at a pharmaceutical company in Manikganj as a chemical engineer.
A second year EEE student, Abrar Fahad was tortured to death allegedly by leaders of the ruling Awami League’s student front Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of Oct 7.
The BCL activists reportedly bludgeoned Abrar for his Facebook post protesting against a recent deal between Bangladesh and India.
His father started a murder case against 19 people — all BUET students — with the Chawkbazar Police Station in Dhaka the same day.
