Campus violence claims 161 lives in 28 years

PHOTO: Bangla Tribune/Sazzad HossainViolence in educational institutions in Bangladesh has claimed as many as 161 lives and left another 16,182 people wounded from 1991 to till September 2019, according to statistics.
Bangla Tribune compiled data from reports carried two national dailies between 1991 and 2018. One more daily newspaper was added to gather data between January and September 2019.
Data shows 46 activists of ruling Awami League's student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) killed during this period followed by BNP's student front Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal with 33 deaths.
Rest of 83 deaths accounts for other student bodies and general students, including 22 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami's student wing Islami Chattra Shibir while another eight from leftist student bodies.
Identities of 119 deceased out of 161 were revealed by the media while political affiliations of the remaining 42 went unreported.
Bangla Tribune research finds the maximum number of causalities reported from campus was during BNP's 1991-1996 tenure when 75 were killed and over 3,500 were wounded. Causality dropped during the next government by Awami League (1996-2001) when 33 people were reportedly killed in the educational institutions.
A significant drop in violence on campus started to appear during the third term of AL (2014-2018) with 14 killings and 1,649 wounded were reported.
As many as 414 people were reported injured and one killed during the incumbent government till September this year, according to data compiled from media reports.
Besides, as many as 136 police members and 82 journalists have been victims of violence while performing their duties on the campus, data shows.
