Over 550 beaten to death in 21 months

Bangla Tribune unveiled the statistics after collecting data of the last 21 months till September 2019, from three national dailies in the country.
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Abrar Fahad beaten to death by ruling party student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) brought the issue to light afresh.
Being beaten to death is quite a common phenomenon with the victims being suspected of stealing, robbery or child lifter. There are instances where women are beaten to death for failing to pay dowry to the husband’s family.
Bangla Tribune’s research found that a larger percentage of male fall victims to these incidents. The statistics showed that in these cases reported till September 2019, 76 percent of the victims were men and 24 percent was female.
A regional analysis showed that a majority of these incidents were reported from Dhaka division with 42 percent of cases of someone beaten to death being reported from various districts within the division.
Chhatogram is in second place with 14 percent deaths and Rajshahi and Khulna with 10 percent, indicating that 75 percent of these incidents were reported from these divisions.
The percentage of incidents of being beaten death reported from Sylhet Division is 4 percent, Barishal 5 percent, Mymensingh 7 percent and Rangpur 9 percent.
Bangla Tribune was able to find out the age of 470 out of the 554 victims and found that 48 percent of them were aged between 21 and 40.
