Abrar Fahad. Photo: FACEBOOKAfter beating to death, BUET student, Abrar Fahad, several Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists wanted to implicate him in a drugs lynching case by placing narcotics in his room.
In this staged drama, the BCL activists called the police but did not allow them to enter the hall premises. However, the malicious plan was thwarted due to the efforts of Abrar’s class mates and teachers.
On Oct 6 night, around 8 pm, Abrar was taken from room 1011 by BCL workers and student of mechanical division Muntasir Al Jamy and civil engineering student Ehteshamul Rabbi.
He was asked to take his mobile and laptop to room 2011 where the ‘senior bhais’ were waiting to talk to him.
Other room-mates say that after beating up Abrar, another set of clothes was taken by Jamy.
At that time, other room-mates realised that Abrar had been made a victim of ragging. But when asked, the Chhatra League workers said that Abrar was alright.
One room-mate said that taking students for torture was a regular incident.
At one point, the students found that BCL workers would try to implicate Abrar with drugs and they closed all doors and windows of room 1011.
Acting OC of Chawkbazar thana, Sohrab Hossain, said: “Police were called but were not allowed to enter the hall, they (BCL) called us and said, we have caught a Jamaat activist, and asked us to take that person away.”
The dead body was kept in their custody for a long time and we only managed to send the body to the DMCH when the teachers came, said the police.

When Abrar’s body was kept within the dormitory building, BUET BCL general secretary, Mehedi Hassan Rasel, Muaz, Chhatra League research secretary Anik Sarkar, organizational secretary Mehedi Hassan and others were present.
BUET doctor Masuk Elahi, Provost Dr Zafar Iqbal, assistant provost, Dr. Iftekhar were also by the stretcher carrying the lifeless body.
The dormitory entrances were blocked by BCL workers.
At one point, BCL workers Muaz and Toaha told general students not to tell their names to the provost.
CCTV footage shows Abrar being carried out after being killed. When teachers were talking to Abrar’s batch mates, BUET BCL general secretary Mehedi Hassan Rasel forced himself into the room and insisted on staying even when the provost asked him to leave.
Abrar’s body, left on a cushion, was found by a student of the mechanical department who went out at around 2 am to get water.
I was traumatised to see his lifeless body and left the scene but came back a little later to find him on a stretcher.
We could not contact his relatives since the phones were with BCL men.
Six out of the nine BCL leaders held over the killing of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad.A BUET student used to give private tuition to Abrar’s younger brother and through him Abrar’s brother, Faiyaz was contacted. Later, students wrote a joint Facebook message and posted on Facebook, which then went viral.
After receiving the news, provost Dr Zafar Iqbal, assistant provost, Shahinur Rahman and doctor Masuk Elahi came to the scene where Chhatra League activists tried to convince them that the death was natural to which the teachers replied: we know the difference between natural and unnatural death.
