A court has granted the police five days to grill in custody the 10 suspects of Abrar Fahad, a student Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), who was beaten to death allegedly by the university unit Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders on Monday (Oct 7).
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury gave the order on Tuesday (Oct 8, General Registry Officer (GRO) Mazharul Islam told Bangla Tribune.
The court granted the police five days against the 10-days they sought for each of the accused.
The suspects who have been remanded are: BCL’s BUET unit General Secretary Mehedi Hassan Rasel, Vice President Mustakim Fuad, Assistant General Secretary Ashiqul Islam Bitu, Deputy Office Secretary Mujtaba Rafid, Deputy Social Welfare Secretary Ifti Mosharraf Shokal, Deputy Law Secretary Amit Shaha, Sports Secretary Sefayetul Islam Jion, Information and Research Secretary Anik Sarker and Library Affairs Secretary Ishtiaq Munshi and Khandaker Tabakkharul Islam Tanbir.
Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, was found dead in the stairway in the early hours of Monday.
A resident of Sher-e-Bangla Hall, Abrar was called up from his room at 7:30pm on Sunday, said police, quoting the students of the hall.
Later, his body was found on the first-floor stairway of the hall at 2am on Monday and post mortem reports showed that he was beaten of death.
His killing sparked protests amongst the university students, while his family blamed BCL over the incident.
