Students protesting the killing of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahim have demanded that the university’s entry tests and academic activities be halted and a called for an indefinite ban on student politics on BUET campus.
University students have taken to the BUET campus since Tuesday (Oct 8) morning, pressing their eight-point demand.
Their demands include highest punishment for the killers and their expulsion from the university within 72 hours.
They also demanded the hall provost be withdrawn by Oct 11 and banning student politics on campus indefinitely.
Their demands also included that the vice chancellor, who is yet to come forward following the incident, be present on campus by 5 pm on Tuesday.
A second-year student of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Abrar was found dead in the dormitory’s stairway in the early hours of Monday (Oct 7).
According to police, Abrar, a resident of Sher-e-Bangla Hall, Abrar was called up from his room at 7:30 pm on Sunday.
His family started a murder case accusing 19 Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders after police detained them in relation to the incident. Nine of the detainees are part BCL’s BUET unit committee.
Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, after the autopsy, said that Abrar died of “internal bleeding and excessive pain” as he was badly beaten up by blunt objects like cricket stump or bamboo stick.
He has been laid to rest on Tuesday morning at his family graveyard in Kushtia.
