Bangladesh Bank briefs the media over the alleged adulteration of gold kept by customs in its vault.Bangladesh Bank has brushed aside a news report claiming that gold kept by the customs department at its vault was adulterated.

On Tuesday, Bangla daily ‘Prothom Alo’ ran the report citing an inspection by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID).

The central bank held a media briefing in the afternoon, where its Executive Director Rabiul Hassan, General Manager Abul Kalam Azad and Currency Officer Awlad Hossain Chowdhury spoke.

Officials denied the claims of gold being adulterated and described the whole matter as a ‘clerical mistake.’

The purity of the gold kept by CIID was 40 percent, but it was recorded 80 percent by mistake, claimed to the central bank.

The security of the central bank’s vault has not been compromised, said General Manager Azad. “A minor error has been found over the purity of the gold. The gold coins kept by CIID marked 40 percent purity, but it was recorded 80 percent in the documents,” he told the media.
