Police have been given nine more days to grill SM Golam Kibria Shamim alias GK Shamim a top government-listed contractor, in two money laundering and arms cases.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim passed the remand order on Wednesday (Oct 2) after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) produced GK Shamim in it seeking 10 days in remands, court's General Registry Officer (GRO) Sub-Inspector Sheikh Raqibul Rahman.
Shamim, who currently in remand over the arms case, will face interrogation for another four days in the same case and five more days in the money laundering case, Rahman told Bangla Tribune.
Earlier in the day, GK Shamim was shown arrested in the money laundering case as Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzel Hossain granted a CID plea on the matter .
Previously on Sept 21, a court granted the police 10 days to interrogate him in two cases filed under the drug and firearms legislation following his arrest by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Friday (Sept 20). His armed bodyguards were remanded for four days each.
The same day RAB started three cases against Shamim, who identifies himself as a Jubo League leader, along with his seven bodyguards after putting him in the custody of the police.
RAB raided Shamim’s residence and office in the city’s Niketon and seized eight firearms, a huge amount of ammunition, Fixed Deposit Receipt (FDR) worth Tk 1.65 bullion and nearly Tk 20 million in cash, a large stash of US and Singaporean dollars and some foreign liquor, officials said. Seven of his armed bodyguards were also arrested.
Shamim is known to be an influential contractor of the Public Works Department and other government organisations.
Soon after his arrest, social media was flooded with photos where he is seen alongside senior Awami League leaders, ministers and former and current police and RAB officials.
His arrest came just two days after Jubo League Dhaka (South) Organising Secretary Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan was held from his Gulshan home for running a casino at the Fakirerpool Youngmen’s club in Dhaka.
