Nearly 600 incidents of rapes have been reported between January and June this year, says a women’s rights organisation.
The Bangladesh Mahila Parishad said on Monday that 592 women were raped across the country in the first six months of 2018. Of which, 29 were murdered and another 98 were victims of gang-rape.
The figures were based on incidents reported in 14 national dailies, it said in a media statement.
According to the right group, another 2,063 women and girls were tortured during the same period.
As many as 61 incidents of attempted rape were reported with another 65 being sexually assaulted and 23 falling victim to abuses.
Ten women and girls were victims of acid attack with two succumbing to their injuries, claimed Mahila Parishad.
It said that 77 incidents of abduction were reported, adding 13 of them were victims of trafficking.
Another 84 were victim of child marriage and 171 others were tortured physically. Seven fell victim to fotwa and three were tortured by police.
The rights group said that 113 females were tortured for dowry leading to the deaths of 51.
Ninety incidents of sexual harassment were reported, causing 11 of the victims killing themselves, the rights group said in the statement.
