Harassed DU student recounts tale of horror on campus

Third-year Economics students Rokeya Gazi Lina and her classmate Asaduzzaman PrantaA female student of Dhaka University, who was harassed and manhandled by students on the campus, has recounted the incident on the social media.
Third-year Economics students Rokeya Gazi Lina and her classmate Asaduzzaman Pranta were harassed on the afternoon of Saturday by 10 to 12 people, who identified them as Dhaka University students.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Lina said as she and Asad were walking on the street near the the Registrar building, around 5:30pm, looking for a rickshaw, the men stooped them.
“One of them aggressively asked whether we were students and demanded to show our ID cards,” reads the post.
Lina said they showed their proof of identities to boys. “Then Asad politely asked about their identities, when one of them slapped him. When I protested, all of them started harassing us. They then physically assaulted both of us.”
They got angry and beat up Asad when he and Lina asked why they were asking for their identity, Lina wrote.
Asad followed them into the Surja Sen Hall, seeking an answer, but the boys, joined by others, beat him up with sticks. Lina was injured as she tried to save Asad, she wrote.

 

On Sunday, the Dhaka University suspended three students over the incident after the victims filed a complaint.

They are Molla Mohammad Al Imran Palash of the Institute of Education and Research and member of BCL’s Masterda Surja Sen Hall unit, Mahmud Arpon of English for Speakers of Other Languages, and Sifat Ullah of Women and Gender studies department.
Proctor Golam Rabbani told Bangla Tribune, they were suspended based on security camera footage and media reports during the initial investigation.
“As an initial measure, they have been suspended. A final call will be taken after the inquiry panel files its report,” he said.
