A suspected mugger has been killed and another injured in a reported shootout with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Dhaka.

The incident was reported around 1.30am on Wednesday (Sept 25) from the capital’s Hatirpool area, said the elite police unit.

The deceased has been identified as Shoshan Mitra.

Superintendent of police Mohiuddin Faruki, company commander of RAB-2, said two muggers coming in a motorbike snatched a bag from a person in front of Lab Aid Hospital around 1.15am.

A patrol team of RAB chased the motorbike. When the motorbike reached Hatirpool area, the muggers opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back in self defence, said Faruki.

Two muggers - Shoshan and Hasan - sustained bullet injuries during the shootout. They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the doctor declared Shoshan dead, added the RAB official.

Three RAB members, including Mohiuddin Faruki had to be given first aid at DMCH for injuries sustained during the incident.
