UGC investigating VCs of 14 public universities

University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC)University Grants Commission (UGC) is investigating a series of corruption allegations that have surfaced against the VCs of 14 public universities, including Dhaka, Jahangirnagar and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University of Science and Technology.
In addition, probe is going on against several public university teachers. After probe, UGC will recommend measures against the guilty.
A full-fledged investigation will be carried out against VCs of Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University.
The UGC has formed a five-member committee to look into the charges against the VC of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University of Science and Technology.
The VC’s to be investigated are: VC of Bangabandhu University of Science and Technology, Professor Khndokar Nasir Uddin, VC of Jahangirnagar Professor Farzana Islam, VC of DU, Professor Akhtaruzzaman, VC of Begum Rokeya University, Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, and VC of Haji Danesh University of Science and Technology, Professor M Abul Kashem.
VC’s of other universities are also under scrutiny.
VC of DU is accused of giving 34 illegal admissions to evening courses, the VC of Jahangirnagar is accused of mismanaging project funds while the VC of National University is facing allegations of nepotism and usage if personal influence to appoint teachers.
The common allegations are financial irregularities, unethical practices, abuse of power, favouritism and clandestine transaction for money over projects, abrasive behaviour and so on.
One VC is accused of sexual misconduct.
UGC chairman Dr Kazi Shahidullah, says: “Once the allegations are proved, recommendations will be made for punitive measures.”
Saying that there are allegations against teachers too, he added: “the probe committee has been asked to work transparently and without any bias or prejudice.”
