Law enforcers have slapped a travel ban on Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat, president of Jubo League's Dhaka South unit, from leaving the country.
The Bangladesh Police asked the immigration authorities at all airports and land ports across the country to bar him from leaving Bangladesh in a letter on Sunday (Sept 22).
A bigwig of the ruling party’s youth front, Samrat have gone into hiding after reports emerged tying the leaders of organisation to the running of illegal casinos in Dhaka.
According to media reports, his main goal was to flee Bangladesh before law enforcement could gather enough evidence to apprehend him.
The involvement of Jubo League leaders in overseeing illicit gambling operations came to light after the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) uncovered illegal casino business in raids on Young Men's Club, Wanderers Club and Muktijoddha Krira Chakra on Sept 18.
Citing sources Jubo League activists and law enforcement sources, media reports said that Samrat had originally tried to go abroad the same day, but police intercepted him at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, and brought him back.
Sources also claimed that Samrat has been desperately trying to flee the country since the casino crackdown began.
The elite police unit arrested Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan, organising secretary of Jubo League's Dhaka south unit, the same day before nabbing Kalabagan Krira Chakra President and Krishak League leader Shafiqul Alam Firoz a day later. Two days later, law enforcers arrested contractor GM Shamim, who also identifies himself as a Jubo League leader.
The crackdown against gambling dens kicked off four days Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed indignation over the activities of Jubo League leaders in a meeting of the party’s Central Executive Committee.
