Rohingya NID fraud: EC technical expert held in Dhaka

Shahanur Mia, a technical expert of EC`s NID Registration Wing, was picked up by a team of team from EC building in the capital`s Aagargaon on Monday (Sept 23The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) of Chattogtam Metropolitan Police (CMP) has detained an Election Commission (EC) official in Dhaka for allegedly including Rohingyas in the electoral roll.
Shahanur Mia, a technical expert of EC's NID Registration Wing, was picked up by a team of polcie from EC building in the capital's Aagargaon on Monday (Sept 23), EC Additional Secretary Abdula Baten told Bangla Tribune.
The detention was made as part of the ongoing investigation on NID forgery, added Baten, who is the director (operations) of the NID wing.
CMP Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shahidullah to Bangla Tribune that, based on a tip-off, a CTTC team from Chattogtam detained the EC official from Dhaka.
Details would be revealed after the arrival of the team, he added.
Earlier in the day, the CMP arrested three people from the EC's Chittagong district office in connection with their alleged involvement in helping Rohingyas obtain NIDs.
The arrestees are Jahid, Shaheen and Pavel Barua. All of the three arrestees are data operators recruited by the EC as temporary staff.
Joynal Abedin, an office assistant at Double-Mooring Thana Election office who was earlier arrested for helping Rohingyas get NIDs, named the trio in his confessional statement, said CMP's CTTC Inspector Rajesh Barua.
According to the Election Commission, as many as 61 Rohingyas were attempted to be enrolled in the electoral roll in the latest voter update.
