BSMMU’s first liver transplant patient dies of dengue

File photo of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University The first-ever liver transplant patient at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) died of dengue.
Siratul Islam Shuvo, 20, died at the BSMMU’s intensive care unit (ICU) on Aug 12 within 24 hours he was hospitalised with dengue fever, Vice-Chancellor Prof Kanak Kanti Barua told the media on Sunday (Sept 8).
Shuvo was released from the BSMMU after the successful transplant, said Barua adding the boy was infected with dengue at home and admitted at the last stage during Eid holidays.
He had immediately been put on life support at the ICU where he died of dengue, the VC said.
Earlier on Jun 24, doctors performed the transplant at the BSMMU.
Professor Dr Zulfiqar Rahman Khan, head of BSMMU's Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Liver Transplant Surgery Department, led a team of 60 doctors that included specialists from India to conduct the 18-hour long operation.
Shuvo and his donor mother Rokshana Begum were released from the hospital on Jul 18.
