The High Court (HC) has denied bail to suspended Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) official Khandaker Enamul Basir in a case filed over bribery allegations.
The bench of Justice Farid Ahmed and Justice ASM Abdul Mobin ordered the bail plea to be withdrawn after a hearing on Tuesday (Sept 3).
The bail plea was submitted on Basir’s behalf on Sunday (Sept 1) by his counsel MM Jamal.
Previously on Jul 23, Dhaka Senior Special Judge KM Imrul Kayes gave the order for him to be sent to jail and be provided with divisional facilities as per the jail code.
Basir, who was arrested on Jul 22 from the capital’s Darus Salam area, stands accused of taking Tk 4 million in bribes from suspended deputy inspector general of police Mizanur Rahman.
On Jul 16, the ACC filed a case against the two and on Jul 21 DIG Mizanur, who was sent to jail by the High Court earlier, was shown arrested in the case.
Disgraced police officer Mizanur in a television interview, claimed that ACC official Basir took Tk 4 million in bribes from him, promising that he would be given a clean chit in an investigation against him.
Basir also divulged probe details during the investigation, according to ACC officials.
Audio clips of mobile conversations between DIG Mizan and Basir were aired on television.
Basir refuted the allegations and said that the DIG had supplied a forged clip to a television channel, using an imitation of his voice.
He was removed from his office and replaced by another ACC director, Md Monzur Morshed after the allegations surfaced.
Both Mizanur and Basir were subsequently suspended by their respective institutions.
