Almost all government institutes have personal websites with some updated regularly. Several websites only contain news about transfers, promotions and appointments. Of these, the websites of police HQ and other units are slipshod. They do not have any important statistics though this was available a few years ago.
The police HQ had a website called ‘Crime statistics’ but it’s not available anymore. However, information about UN peace missions can be found.
The ‘recent activities’ section contains some press releases of the IGP. The police have two battalions and several units. The battalions are RAB and Armed Police Battalion, APBN. RAB has a separate website, APBN does not have a site but the Airport Armed Police Unit has a website.
The much talked about the Police Bureau of Investigation, PBI has a separate website. Special Branch, SB, does not have any site but if one click’s SB on the police HQ site, the immigration site opens with immigration-related rules.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police, DMP, sites have information related to crime dating from January and February 2019. This site contains information about recovered arms, explosives, stolen cars and drugs.
Crime data from 2017, 2015 can be accessed, though 2011 doesn’t open at all.
There is a separate news portal called DMP News. The posts of the editor, an executive editor are held by deputy and assistant commissioner level officers. The patron is the DMP commissioner and it has photos plus information about police drives, arrests and cases.
DMP deputy commissioner, Muhamamd Touhidul Islam, says: “We have crime conference every month and will look into how the crime statistics can be updated.”
Chattogram Metropolitan Police sites are in the same condition; no crime data has been updated since September 2018. But old information is available as per the category.
The Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, RMP, has a site called ‘Our Service’ with ten categories.
Of these ‘traffic management’ and ‘victim support centre’ pages open while the other eight show the comment ‘under construction’.
However, the ‘RMP news’ category mentions all drives and recovery related information. There are no sites for Khulna Metropolitan Police, KMP, Barishal, BMP, Sylhet, SMP and other districts like Gazipur, Rangpur, Mymensingh and railway police.
Commenting on updating information, head of ICT of the police HQ, DIG Monibur Rahman, says: “We always upload sites, but sometimes, there is a delay in the face of too much pressure from regular work.”
