Started by Bangladeshis in the 1950s, the British curry industry employs over 100,000 people and contributes over £4 billion to the British exchequer.Owners and staff of Bangladeshi restaurants have demonstrated in front of the British parliament on Tuesday seeking the government’s intervention to save the curry industry.
The demonstration, organised by Bangladesh Caterers Association, was attended by over a thousand British Bangladeshis.
Bangladeshi restaurateurs have been urging the government for the last few years to simplify the process to recruit chefs and staff from Bangladesh.
Owners say the existing overseas recruiting process has left them with a lack of skilled workforce as well as a drop in food quality and high price.
